The Council is responsible for all public roads in the borough, other than the red routes which are maintained by Transport for London. The Council is responsible for:
- maintenance - road gritting - Controlled Parking Zones - street lighting - road safety schemes, such as speed bumps and 20 mph zones. Between 2006-09, the Council spent £15.8 million on making improvements to roads and pavements.
The Council may have to reduce radically the amount it spends on Lewisham's roads.
This could mean less maintenance of highways and pavements, less consultation over proposed new parking arrangements, or reductions in the amount of work done with schools regarding pupil's road safety and awareness.

A moratorium on new 20mph zones and the poor quality consultations would be welcome by people of Lewisham. Lewisham already has more humps than any other London borough in my experience. Whilst this does give us a reputation as a no-go area for commuters and through traffic, it also increases noise and pollution from cars accelerating and decelerating every few hundred yards all across Lewisham.
Let's spend the money instead on increased road safety to protect local people when they walk in Lewisham and in other parts of London as well.

- road maintenance: make small repairs quickly and often before deep expensive potholes develop - road gritting: insure and encourage those who grit outside their own homes - Controlled Parking Zones: these should pay for themselves - street lighting: stop replacing lampposts that are working perfectly. - road safety schemes, such as speed bumps and 20 mph zones: make the busy roads that have the accidents 20mph and back this up with speed cameras which will pay for themselves

Lewisham's roads are in a shocking state and have been for years. You dont need a sign to tell you you are entering or leaving Lewisham, you just look at the road surface. If any less is spent on road maintenance our roads will become even less safe.
There are roads and pavements that haven't been maintained for years and years and are unsafe to use (and I dont call sending some bloke round with a heap of tarmac and a shovel to dump a loose lump of tarmac on any pothole or lump maintenance). If Lewisham spends less in this area there are roads and pavements that are low priority now that will never be dealt with.
The paving slabs in my street are so broken and unlevel that my kids have ruined countless clothes, hurt themselves and my daughter broke her tooth having tripped on them. When we report these things all that happens is the man+shovel+tarmac arrives to deposit lumps of tarmac that wash away come the next heavy rain fall!

I agree. Also, review policy on providing grit in bulk to residents on side roads so they can spread it themselves on the carriageway. (I know the old-fashioned communal bunkers are open to vandalism, but there must be some way round that.)

A large proportion of Lewisham's roads (and even footpaths) is used as 'free' garaging. This chokes roads makes them unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists, is an eysore and a lost revenue opportunity unlike most other London boroughs.
Please introduce borough wide road garaging charging. Say for parking more than 4 hours in a given day. This would generate much need revenue, make parking (as opposed to garaging) easier for motorists and encourage a shift to car clubs (who would be exempted).
Whilst I guess there may be an instant horror from some motorists at such a proposal I would suggest that on reflection the move from having cars that stand doing nothing but get in the way for 95%+ of the time is not in the long term interests of most motorists.
Helping to make a substantial contribution to avoid some horrific cuts in services is a real bonus too.

there are so many pot holes in lewisham roads that I dont think it would make the slightest bit of difference.

In my experience much of Lewisham has controlled parking zones. Also be aware that revenues generated by such schemes are ring fenced to roads and so could not be used for example to fund libraries.
